Hiring workers from India

The visa cycle runs 2–3 weeks longer than visa-free hiring, but it delivers qualifications the CIS market has largely run out of. Here are the stages, the timeline and real contract terms.

India is the direction that makes the visa cycle worth tolerating. It holds qualifications that the visa-free market has largely run out of: MIG/TIG welders with factory experience, CNC operators, masons, machinists with production records.

What the employer needs

The full visa pack: a quota for foreign workers, a permit to engage foreign labour, an invitation letter for each candidate and a work permit. This is the fundamental difference from Uzbekistan, where none of it applies. Hiring has to be planned a cycle ahead, because quota applications are filed in advance for the following year.

Timeline by stage

StageDuration
Sourcing and shortlist with work video48–72 hours after a confirmed request
Screening, document and background checks2–4 working days
Invitation letter≈20 working days
Consular procedure and visa2–4 weeks
Logistics, arrival, onboarding3–7 days
Total, request to arrival on site5–8 weeks

How the qualification is verified

On work video. The candidate films the operation for your profile: a weld in the required position, a part on a machine, brickwork, a seam on a sewing machine. A second video is a self-presentation: how the person speaks, what they expect, whether they are ready for the schedule and the climate. You watch both before any ticket is paid for.

We collect education and skill-grade documents too, but in blue-collar trades they prove little — such papers are not hard to obtain in the source countries. The video proves it.

Real terms: a project example

Dress maker, Indian national. Net pay 70,000 roubles a month after taxes and social contributions. Schedule: 12 hours a day, 26 working days a month. Two-year employment contract, two-year work visa with an option to extend. The employer provided: work permit and invitation letter for the consulate, flights to the place of work and back, reimbursement of visa costs, airport pickup, free three meals a day and accommodation. Overtime and insurance followed the Russian Labour Code. Selection was by work video and self-presentation video.

What to know about language and adaptation

Candidates from India generally do not speak Russian; part of the pool speaks English. The working practice is to build the crew around a foreman who speaks Russian or English and to cover basic safety in pre-departure preparation. It is that preparation, rather than the selection itself, that determines retention past month three: people leave not because they cannot do the work but because they were not ready for the living conditions and the climate.

A two-year contract, meanwhile, gives you something visa-free hiring does not: predictable staffing over two seasons.
